IMF Solutions Are Like Treating a Patient in the ICU – Ravi Karunanayake

July 17, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, has compared receiving assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after a country becomes bankrupt to treating a critically ill patient in an intensive care unit.

Addressing the media, the MP emphasized that while IMF remedies are essential in times of economic collapse, their impact must be carefully considered.

He warned that if the patient—the country—dies as a result of the IMF’s treatment, it becomes a serious concern.

Karunanayake also pointed out that certain economic groups in Sri Lanka have been severely affected by the current IMF solutions.

Therefore, he urged the government to ensure that future IMF assistance is obtained and applied on a humanitarian basis.
