Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, stated that the tariffs imposed during the Trump administration in the United States have adversely affected nearly the entire export sector of Sri Lanka.
He noted that key export categories such as tires, fish, tea, and garments are among the industries most affected.
Speaking to the media, MP Karunanayake emphasized that the United States, with its vast economy, remains a major importer and consumer of goods from countries around the world.
He added that under former President Trump, the U.S. shifted from acting as the “world’s policeman” to taking on a more business-centric approach. However, the MP observed that it is still too early to assess whether that shift has ultimately been a success or failure.
