ITAK Urges Urgent Probe Into Death of Muttaiyankattu Man; Hartal Planned in North and East

August 11, 2025

The Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to launch an urgent and impartial investigation into the death of 32-year-old Edirmanasingam Kabilraj, whose body was discovered in the Muttaiyankattu Tank on Saturday morning.

In a letter to the President, the ITAK alleged that on August 7, 2025, five men were summoned to the 63rd Division camp of the Sri Lanka Army in Muttaiyankattu, where they were “severely beaten” by soldiers. One of them, Kabilraj, reportedly went missing and was later found dead.

“It has now been revealed that some soldiers have been arrested in this regard,” the letter stated, stressing the need for an “unhindered, thorough investigation” and the prosecution of those responsible.

The party also used the incident to reiterate its long-standing concerns over what it described as “the oppressive conduct and excessive presence of the military in the North and East,” urging the President to take “immediate steps to reduce military presence without delay.”

Meanwhile, Batticaloa District MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam announced that a hartal will be held across the Northern and Eastern provinces on Friday, August 15, 2025, to protest the incident.
