Indian National Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has voiced concern over the detention of former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, cautioning against what he termed “the politics of vengeance.”
In a social media post, Tharoor said Wickremesinghe was being held on charges that, at first glance, appeared trivial. He noted that the former leader’s health had deteriorated in custody, prompting his transfer from the prison hospital to the National Hospital in Colombo.
Tharoor urged Sri Lankan authorities to uphold judicial due process while ensuring humane treatment, emphasizing that Wickremesinghe deserved dignity after decades of public service.
The Indian lawmaker, who met Wickremesinghe during a recent visit to Colombo, added that although the matter was internal to Sri Lanka, the way it is handled would be closely watched internationally.
