Opposition parties convened a joint press conference in Colombo today, strongly condemning the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Held under the theme “Let’s Defeat the Constitutional Dictatorship,” opposition leaders alleged that the government was weaponizing the law to suppress political opponents. They warned that Wickremesinghe’s detention reflected a wider strategy to erode democratic institutions and stifle dissenting voices.
Several party representatives emphasized the need for collective resistance, framing the arrest as a critical test for the country’s commitment to democracy and rule of law.
