Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has criticized the Central Bank, alleging that it is obstructing the implementation of government financial policies.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said the Central Bank does not have the mandate from the people to make unilateral decisions for the country. He emphasized that it should not interfere with government decisions aimed at shaping the nation’s future, and that the government must ensure it does not allow such interference.
He pointed out that, in practice, the Central Bank has intervened in matters related to imports and investments, even when policies have already been formulated by the Finance Minister.
“What the Central Bank should do is act independently and support the government’s activities, not obstruct them,” the MP stated, adding that his remarks are intended not to defend any institution but to protect the future of 2.2 million people.
