Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has emphasized that the media has a responsibility to accurately inform the public about what politicians say.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake noted that citizens vote with the expectation that elected officials will serve their interests. Accordingly, the media should ensure that the public receives truthful information regarding statements made by politicians after coming to power.
He made these remarks in response to a journalist’s question about a statement by a Deputy Minister claiming that the current government has been in power for 15 years, not 5, and that its program will only be revealed after 15 years.
