Government to Introduce Biometric Fingerprint Scanners in All State Institutions

August 28, 2025

The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government announced that biometric fingerprint scanners will be installed in all government institutions that have not yet adopted the system.

Minister of Public Administration, Professor A.H.M.H. Abayaratne, told The Morning that while many state institutions already use biometric scanners, several offices are still without them. He said the government will take steps to ensure fingerprint machines are introduced across all such workplaces in the near future.

According to the Minister, the move will streamline attendance monitoring, making the process easier for both employees and the administration. He stressed that with overtime allowances being increased under the current government, it is vital to ensure that payments are calculated and distributed correctly.

“Public employees are paid with public money, so their salaries and overtime allowances must be accounted for accurately,” Minister Abayaratne said, adding that fingerprint scanners are an essential tool to achieve this.
