The Colombo North Crimes Division stated that a stock of chemicals suspected to be used in manufacturing the drug Ice, discovered in the Middeniya area, will be examined by the Government Analyst today.

The stock, weighing approximately 50,000 kilograms, will be handed over to the Middeniya Police for further investigation. Both the Government Analyst’s Department and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board are continuing their inquiries.

Police said officers from the Police Special Task Force and Middeniya Police have been deployed to secure the site where the chemicals were found.

The discovery follows information obtained during the interrogation of organized criminal Backhoe Saman, who is currently in custody at the Colombo North Crimes Division. Based on his statements, the chemicals were located yesterday on land owned by Sampath Manamperi in Middeniya.

Manamperi, a former Provincial Councilor, is reported to have had close ties with Backhoe Saman and has been missing since the criminal group, including Saman, returned to the country. He had contested the Thalawa division of the Angunakolapelessa Pradeshiya Sabha under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in the last local government election but was defeated. Police are currently working to locate and arrest him.

Statements have been recorded from his wife, brother, and two other relatives, according to the Colombo North Crimes Division.
