Sri Lankan President Congratulates Nepal’s First Woman Interim Prime Minister

September 13, 2025

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday extended his congratulations to Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, expressing confidence that her leadership will steer Nepal towards lasting peace and democracy.

“I convey my warmest congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Sushila Karki on her assumption of the Premiership of Nepal’s interim government,” President Dissanayake wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “We are confident that her leadership will guide Nepal towards a smooth return to lasting peace and democracy.”

Karki, a former Chief Justice of Nepal, was sworn in as interim Prime Minister on Friday night. Her appointment follows the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down earlier this week after massive anti-corruption protests against his government.

Sushila Karki has made history as the first woman to serve as Nepal’s Prime Minister.
