Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, says the Central Bank must prioritize strengthening the country’s foreign reserves rather than focusing on increasing staff salaries.
Speaking to the media, the MP emphasized that while the Central Bank is an independent institution, its independence should be directed toward fulfilling its core responsibility of stabilizing the economy.
He also noted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which applies pressure on areas such as electricity tariffs, should likewise extend support to Sri Lanka in boosting its foreign reserves.
Karunanayake stressed that the government should engage with the IMF to secure such assistance, adding that the Central Bank will have a key role to play in this process.
