October 4, 2025

Sri Lanka has officially issued the Final Notice of Assignment (NoA) for the upcoming 2025 5G spectrum auction, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to advance its digital infrastructure.

The announcement was made during a special media briefing organized by the Information and Communications Technology Agency (ICTA) yesterday.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) Waruna Sri Dhanapala, TRCSL Director General Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Bandula Herath, Chairman of the 5G Auction Committee and Director General of the Ministry of Finance Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, and TRCSL Director Shantha Gunanandana.

Deputy Minister Weeraratne stated that the final spectrum allocation will lay a strong foundation for the expansion of next-generation telecommunications services, positioning 5G technology as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and industrial advancement.

He emphasized that high-speed, low-latency connectivity and modern digital infrastructure have the potential to transform key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and garment manufacturing.

“For instance, smart sensors in agriculture can boost crop yields while minimizing resource wastage, and automation in manufacturing can significantly enhance quality and productivity,” he noted.

The government anticipates that the 5G spectrum auction will accelerate Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and enhance its competitiveness in the global economy.
