Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today that 425 women have been convicted and imprisoned between January 1 and August 31 this year.
She further revealed that 4,686 women have been remanded in custody on suspicion during the same period.
In addition, 38 women have been imprisoned in connection with various other incidents this year.
The Prime Minister made these remarks while responding to a question raised during today’s parliamentary session, highlighting the growing number of women affected by the criminal justice process in the country.
