The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ advisory warning of severe lightning in several provinces and districts.
According to the Department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in several areas of the Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers.
The public has been urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage and ensure safety during lightning activity. Authorities advise people to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies, and refrain from using wired telephones or electrical appliances connected to the mains.
For emergency assistance, members of the public are requested to contact local disaster management authorities.
