Sri Lanka recorded a significant decline in marriages in 2024, according to the latest data released by the Department of Census and Statistics.
A total of 139,290 marriages were registered in 2024 — an 8 percent decrease compared to the previous year.
In 2022, during the height of the economic crisis, 171,140 marriages were recorded across the country, highlighting a continuing downward trend in marriage registrations.
Earlier, official data also revealed a sharp fall in birth rates. The department reported 220,761 births in 2024, down from 301,706 in 2020, indicating a notable demographic shift.
