Molly, a 24-year-old New Zealander travelling solo in Southeast Asia, has been in the news after revealing that a man behaved inappropriately in front of her during her stay in Sri Lanka.
Originally from Christchurch, Molly said she was satisfied with the swift action taken by the Sri Lankan police to apprehend the suspect. However, she expressed surprise that some individuals were attempting to blame her for the incident.
Molly, who documents her travels on Instagram, told her followers that a single incident should not be used to misrepresent a country or to discourage women from travelling alone.
“I never thought that video would go viral… but if it starts a real conversation about women’s safety, travelling alone, and the realities we still face, then it’s worth it,” she wrote.
She also urged the public not to let the behaviour of one individual influence their perception of Sri Lanka, describing the country as an “incredible place” where she felt safe throughout her month-long journey. She stressed that women should be able to travel anywhere without fear.
Expressing gratitude to her supporters and to the Sri Lanka Tourist Police for their prompt response, Molly added, “Let’s continue the conversation, but let’s remember that the world is full of good people.”
