The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau has confirmed that it is closely monitoring social media posts shared by foreign tourists that may negatively impact the country’s reputation.
Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam stated that action was taken after a video surfaced showing a foreign tourist arguing with a local individual in the Weligama tourist sea zone. A formal complaint was lodged with the relevant social media platform, and the video has since been removed.
The Bureau has also raised concerns about another recently circulated video depicting a foreign national sexually harassing a woman, noting its potential to harm the country’s tourism industry.
Chairman Hewawasam emphasised that legal action will be taken against any foreign national whose actions damage Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
