The National Police Commission (NPC) has received 5,935 public complaints over the past nine years, but 4,902 of them—82 percent—remained uninvestigated by the end of 2024, according to the latest audit report issued by the National Audit Office.
The audit further revealed that none of the complaints received by the NPC head office had been investigated, highlighting severe shortcomings in the commission’s complaint-handling process. It recommended that the NPC take steps to significantly improve its investigation procedures and ensure timely action on public grievances.
In its response to the audit, the National Police Commission cited several reasons for the delays, including:
-
Failure of complainants and related parties to submit requested information clearly and accurately
-
Delays in receiving police investigation reports
-
A longstanding vacancy in the position of Deputy Director of the Complaints Investigation Division
These factors, the commission stated, have hindered its ability to complete investigations within a reasonable timeframe.
The findings are detailed in the 2024 audit report on the National Police Commission. (Divaina)
