Former UNP Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says that Sri Lanka is among the countries with the highest number of civil servants in the world.
He noted that the current civil service comprises 1.6 million employees, and any further additions will place an additional financial burden on the people.
Karunanayake criticized the government, which had promised to resolve the civil service crisis, for acting in the opposite direction. He highlighted that the country already spends approximately Rs. 1.7 trillion on civil service salaries and pensions.
The MP added that such actions raise the question of how the current government differs from previous administrations in terms of fiscal responsibility.
He shared these views during an interview with the ceylonwire.lk website.
