December 1, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said it is the responsibility of the ruling party to take the questions raised by the opposition seriously and provide clear and accurate answers.

He made these remarks in Parliament while seeking clarification from the government on the exact level of the country’s debt burden. The MP also stressed that the government should disclose precise information on the annual interest payments associated with this debt.

Responding on behalf of the government, Minister Anil Jayantha stated that the total debt of the central government stood at Rs. 30.93 trillion as of September this year. He further noted that the government is currently engaged in implementing a debt management programme.
