December 14, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said that it will take several months to accurately assess and publicly disclose the full extent of the damage caused to the country by Cyclone Ditwah.

He noted that the government has stated that 22 out of the country’s 25 districts were affected by the adverse weather, indicating that the overall impact is likely to be severe.

Based on preliminary assessments, the MP said the total damage could amount to between Rs. 2 trillion and Rs. 2.5 trillion. However, he stressed that a comprehensive evaluation is necessary before final figures can be confirmed.

Ravi Karunanayake also emphasized that if Sri Lanka is to seek assistance from foreign countries to recover from the current situation, it is essential to accurately calculate and clearly present the scale of the damage incurred.
