Considering the prevailing disaster situation in the country and the damage caused to school infrastructure and transportation systems in several provinces, the Ministry of Education has decided not to extend school hours in 2026 until these facilities are fully restored.
Accordingly, the key arrangements for the 2026 school year are as follows:

School hours for Grades 5 to 13 will be from 7.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

The first term for government schools, government-approved private schools, and Pirivenas will commence on 5 January 2026

The number of periods per day for Grades 6 to 13 will be seven, with 45 minutes per period

The education reform process will be implemented for Grades 1 and 6 in 2026

Academic activities for Grade 6 will formally commence on 21 January 2026

Identification of Grade 1 students will begin on 5 January 2026, while formal academic activities will start on 29 January 2026

Activity books for Grade 1 and learning modules for Grade 6 have been distributed prior to the commencement of academic activities

Textbooks for all other grades have already been fully distributed

The remaining part of the 2025 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination will be held from 12 to 20 January 2026

A detailed circular outlining these arrangements will be issued on 2 January 2026
The Ministry stated that these measures are aimed at ensuring continuity in education while allowing time for the restoration of essential facilities affected by recent disasters.
