The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has collected more than Rs. 285 million in fines from raids carried out across the country over the past year.
According to the authority, the fines were imposed following around 21,000 raids conducted islandwide in 2025 to curb violations of consumer protection laws.
In addition, the CAA tested 223 food and non-food product samples to ensure compliance with required standards. The tested items included steel wire, coconut oil, cosmetics, rice, canned fish, chilli powder, milk, hair dyes, cordials, and syrups, the authority said in a statement.
The CAA also revealed that 5,002 complaints were received in 2025 through the ‘1977’ consumer complaints hotline. Of these, approximately 79% have been successfully resolved.
