WhatsApp Introduces “Strict Account Settings” to Protect High-Risk Users

January 28, 2026

Meta’s WhatsApp has announced a new security feature called “Strict Account Settings”, designed to protect users vulnerable to sophisticated cyber attacks, including journalists, activists, and public figures.

The lockdown-style feature, set to roll out in the coming weeks, activates enhanced security measures with a single tap, including:

  • Blocking attachments and media from unknown senders

  • Silencing calls from unfamiliar contacts

  • Disabling link previews, which could be exploited as attack vectors

WhatsApp stated that the feature is intended for a small group of users who may face rare but advanced surveillance or hacking attempts. All personal messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption by default.

The company noted that the new mode restricts some app functionality in exchange for stronger security, similar to Apple’s Lockdown Mode and Google’s Android Advanced Protection Mode.

Cybersecurity experts have welcomed the update, emphasizing its potential to safeguard users often targeted by spyware and advanced hacking campaigns.

Users will be able to enable the feature via the Privacy settings menu once it becomes available.
