Japan lodges protest over China’s gas field exploration

January 7, 2026

The Japanese government sent a formal protest to China over possible gas field drilling, Kyodo News reported on Wednesday. The protest was lodged on January 2 after Japan confirmed the presence of a drilling ship in the Chinese waters on the Japan-China median line in the East China Sea.

According to the report, Tokyo believes that Beijing is test-drilling for a new gas field. Japan previously denounced a “structure” built by China in the disputed waters in August.
