Did the Government Mishandle Its Engagement With the IMF?

January 5, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake says the government’s approach to dealing with the International Monetary Fund has raised concerns at a time when the country is facing severe difficulties following the cyclone.

Speaking to the media, the MP pointed out that Sri Lanka had failed to take steps to request the sixth tranche of IMF assistance despite the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Ditva.

Instead, he said, the government chose to move towards the IMF’s Rapid Financing Facility.

He stressed that the appropriate course of action would have been to first seek the release of the sixth tranche.

He also called for accountability from senior government officials over decisions taken in this regard.
