January 5, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake says that shifting to renewable energy instead of spending heavily on oil imports is a timely and appropriate step for the country.

Speaking to the media, the MP stated that renewable energy offers Sri Lanka an effective way to save a significant amount of foreign exchange.

However, he pointed out that the government’s position on renewable energy development remains unclear.

He emphasized that the urgent need at present is to promote renewable energy to the fullest extent possible.

The MP added that he has repeatedly urged the government to pay attention to this issue, highlighting its importance on several occasions.
