Former SIS Director Suresh Sallay Detained for 90 Days Over Easter Sunday Probe

February 28, 2026

Former Director of the State Intelligence Service, retired Major General Suresh Sallay, has been granted permission to be detained for 90 days for questioning in connection with ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Sallay was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department as part of continuing probes into the coordinated bombings that killed more than 260 people and injured hundreds across Sri Lanka on April 21, 2019.

Authorities said the 90-day detention will enable investigators to question the former intelligence chief under legal provisions applicable to national security investigations.

The Easter Sunday attacks targeted churches and luxury hotels, including St. Anthony’s Shrine and the Shangri-La Hotel Colombo, and remain one of the deadliest terror incidents in Sri Lanka’s history.

Multiple investigations and related legal proceedings are continuing, with further developments expected as inquiries progress.
