Four individuals attached to the Department of Motor Traffic, including a serving official and three former officers, have been remanded until the 20th of this month over multiple allegations related to fraudulent vehicle registrations.
They were arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and were produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama this afternoon, after which the remand orders were issued.
Among those arrested is an Investigations and Development Assistant attached to the Development Division of the Motor Traffic Department. She is accused of knowingly accepting a forged document submitted in connection with a request to change the colour of a motor vehicle and issuing a window number based on that document.
A former Deputy Commissioner of the department is also among the suspects. He is accused of approving certification for a weight-certificate request form that had been submitted using forged documents relating to a motor vehicle.
A former Assistant Director of the department’s Information and Communication Technology Division was arrested over allegations of registering four vehicles that had been imported without customs clearance.
The Bribery Commission also stated that a former departmental clerk was taken into custody for allegedly entering false information into the Motor Traffic Department’s computer system and authorising an unlawful vehicle registration through an irregular assignment process.
