World Water Day is being marked today under the theme “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” focusing on reducing inequalities faced by women and girls while recognizing their vital role in water management.
Globally, more than 2.1 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water.
According to the United Nations, over 3 billion people depend on water sources that cross national borders to meet their daily needs.
A total of 153 countries share rivers, lakes and other water resources with neighboring nations.
Environmental organizations also note that nearly half of the world’s population experiences severe water scarcity at least once every year.
