Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has raised concerns over the gap between official inflation figures and the actual cost of living faced by the public.
Speaking at a media conference, the MP said that while an increase in foreign reserves is generally a positive development, it is not meaningful if the rupee continues to depreciate or if consumer prices remain high.
He stressed that the real issue for citizens is the cost of living, not just statistical indicators.
The MP noted that although controlling inflation refers to slowing down the rate of price increases, it does not necessarily mean that prices have decreased. He pointed out that essential items such as rice remain expensive in practice.
He added that authorities must ensure their policies deliver real relief to the public and align with the promises made, rather than relying solely on favourable economic statistics.
