Project Launched to Digitize Sacred Tripitaka Manuscripts

March 30, 2026

The Sri Dalada Maligawa Library has launched a special project to digitize the Tripitaka, one of the oldest and most valuable collections of Buddhist scriptures.

The initiative has received approval from the Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatta and Asgiri Chapters, as well as from Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela, who serves as the library’s trustee.

The Pali Tripitaka was first written down in the 1st century BC during the reign of King Walagamba at the Aluvihara in Matale, with the aim of preserving the Buddha’s teachings that were previously passed down orally.

These historic manuscripts are currently preserved at the Dalada Maligawa Library.

According to Librarian Jantha Samarakoon, the digitization process is expected to be completed within the next six to seven months, ensuring long-term preservation and easier access to these sacred texts.
