Iran claims downing of US aircraft as tensions escalate

April 4, 2026

Iran has claimed that it shot down two US military aircraft on Friday, according to Iranian state media and military statements.

Iranian authorities said the first aircraft, identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle, was downed in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. Reports indicate that the jet was carrying two crew members, with one rescued while the other remains missing.

US media, citing officials, reported that two Black Hawk helicopters deployed for a search-and-rescue mission were also hit during the operation, although they were able to return safely to base.

Iran further claimed that a second aircraft, identified as an A-10 Warthog, was shot down over the Gulf. US reports stated that the pilot was successfully rescued.

Iran’s military said a “new advanced” air defense system was used in the incidents, asserting that it demonstrates the country’s continued capability to engage US forces.

Iranian state television also reportedly announced a reward for the capture of US pilots alive.

The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation, although no further official details have been released by US authorities.
