No Fertilizer Shortage During Yala Season – Minister Lal Kantha

May 9, 2026

K D Lal Kantha says there will be no shortage of fertilizer for any crops during the ongoing Yala cultivation season in Sri Lanka.

The Minister made the remarks following a special discussion on the fertilizer sector held at the National Agriculture Information and Communication Centre.

According to the Minister, sufficient fertilizer stocks required for the Yala season are currently available and are being distributed through Agrarian Service Centres across the country.

He also stated that the government has decided to resume fertilizer distribution through the private sector as usual after a temporary suspension requested by the state.

While acknowledging that some areas experienced distribution delays, Lal Kantha said a structured programme has now been introduced to ensure uninterrupted fertilizer supply in the future.

The Minister further warned that legal action has been initiated against individuals and groups allegedly spreading false or misleading information regarding fertilizer availability.

In addition, he announced that Cabinet approval has already been granted for the importation of fertilizer required for the upcoming Maha cultivation season, with both the public and private sectors expected to participate in the process.

He also noted that steps are being taken to promote high-yield next-generation fertilizers and expand fertilizer application based on soil testing to improve agricultural productivity.
