Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, together with the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka and other stakeholders in the insurance sector, has decided to introduce digital motor insurance cards in place of traditional motor insurance certificates.
According to authorities, the Sri Lanka Police has already been informed of the new system, and the Inspector General of Police has issued instructions to all police stations.
Under the new arrangement, motor insurance coverage will be provided through three methods:
- A digital motor insurance card
- A printed certificate issued upon the request of the policyholder
- A digital insurance card accessible through a mobile phone application
Meanwhile, police stated that a National Insurance Verification System has also been introduced alongside the digital insurance initiative.
The system allows users and authorities to verify the validity of motor insurance policies through several methods.
Accordingly:
- Users can dial 1338 from any mobile network and enter the vehicle number or insurance certificate number to check policy status.
- Users can also send the vehicle number or policy number via SMS to *1338#, after which the insurance status will be sent instantly through a reply message.
