Low-Pressure System Near Sri Lanka Expected to Weaken Within 36 Hours

May 14, 2026

The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka says the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist but is expected to move away from the island and gradually weaken over the next 36 hours.

According to the Department, showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western, and Northern provinces.

Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is likely in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle District and Matara District.

The Department further stated that showers or thundershowers may occur in other parts of the island after 1:00 p.m.

The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
