IMF Reaffirms Support for Sri Lanka Amid Economic Pressures

May 15, 2026

The International Monetary Fund has reiterated its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka as the country continues efforts to maintain economic stability and recovery.

Speaking at a media briefing today (14), IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack stated that Sri Lanka has recently faced “two very large shocks” that have placed pressure on the economy.

According to Kozack, the first was Cyclone Ditwah, which she described as a major natural disaster that significantly affected economic activity.

The second challenge identified was the continuing impact of the Middle East conflict, which has affected global economic conditions and indirectly impacted Sri Lanka.

Despite these pressures, Kozack praised the resilience shown by both the Sri Lankan economy and its people.

She also noted that reforms introduced under Sri Lanka’s IMF-supported economic programme are beginning to produce positive results, adding that the country’s economic performance is gradually improving.

According to the IMF official, this progress has been supported by what she described as a strong commitment to reform by Sri Lankan authorities.

Kozack further emphasized that the IMF will continue to work closely with the government to determine how best to provide additional support, reaffirming that the Fund remains “very committed to supporting Sri Lanka.”
