US Dollar Selling Rate Surges Above Rs. 354 as Rupee Weakens Further

May 21, 2026

The Sri Lankan Rupee continued to depreciate against the United States Dollar today (21) amid mounting economic pressures and ongoing geopolitical tensions linked to the Middle East conflict.

According to the latest daily exchange rates released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka:

  • The buying rate of the US dollar was recorded at Rs. 342.63
  • The selling rate rose sharply to Rs. 354.03

This marks a significant increase compared to yesterday’s (20) exchange rates, when:

  • The buying rate stood at Rs. 332.23
  • The selling rate was recorded at Rs. 342.70

The rapid depreciation of the rupee comes amid rising demand for foreign currency, increased import expenditure — particularly on fuel and vehicles — and global economic uncertainty caused by the continuing instability in the Middle East.
