Special Island-Wide Security Program Announced for Vesak Week

Sri Lanka Police has announced a special island-wide security programme for the upcoming Vesak week to ensure devotees can observe religious activities peacefully and safely.

According to Police Headquarters, Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, considered the most sacred occasion for Buddhists worldwide, falls on May 30, 2026.

Police stated that large crowds are expected at Buddhist temples and religious sites across Sri Lanka during the Vesak season, while Vesak lantern exhibitions, pandals, and ‘Bhakthi Gee’ programmes are also scheduled in many areas.

The Inspector General of Police has instructed all police stations to:

  • Minimize traffic congestion near Vesak celebration zones
  • Ensure public convenience and safety
  • Strengthen crowd management measures

Police further noted that:

  • Mobile patrols will be increased
  • Special daytime and nighttime security operations will be intensified across all police divisions
  • Public safety and property protection measures will be strengthened throughout the festive period

Authorities warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone engaging in activities that:

  • Undermine the dignity of Vesak
  • Disturb devotees
  • Create public inconvenience

The public has also been requested to cooperate with authorities by:

  • Avoiding excessive noise
  • Refraining from inappropriate behavior
  • Avoiding alcohol and narcotic substances during Vesak celebrations

Organizers of Dansal programmes have been advised to follow health and safety regulations and implement proper crowd-control arrangements to reduce traffic congestion.

Police additionally urged the public to:

  • Stay alert regarding suspicious individuals
  • Safeguard valuables and personal belongings
  • Pay close attention to the safety of children and elderly persons in crowded areas
