The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka says the South-West Monsoon has now established over Sri Lanka, with prevailing rainy conditions expected to continue over the south-western parts of the island.
According to the Department, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in:
- Western Province
- Sabaragamuwa Province
- North-Western Province
as well as in:
- Galle District
- Matara District
- Kandy District
- Nuwara Eliya District
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some places in these areas.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few locations in:
- Uva Province
- Ampara District
- Batticaloa District
after 1:00 p.m.
The Department further stated that fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over:
- Western slopes of the central hills
- Northern Province
- North-Central Province
- North-Western Province
- Southern Province
- Trincomalee District
The public has been advised to take precautions against:
- Temporary localized strong winds
- Lightning during thundershowers
- Flooding and falling trees in vulnerable areas
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as monsoon activity strengthens across the island.
