South-West Monsoon Established Over Sri Lanka; Heavy Rainfall Expected

The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka says the South-West Monsoon has now established over Sri Lanka, with prevailing rainy conditions expected to continue over the south-western parts of the island.

According to the Department, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in:

  • Western Province
  • Sabaragamuwa Province
  • North-Western Province

as well as in:

  • Galle District
  • Matara District
  • Kandy District
  • Nuwara Eliya District

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some places in these areas.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few locations in:

  • Uva Province
  • Ampara District
  • Batticaloa District

after 1:00 p.m.

The Department further stated that fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph can be expected at times over:

  • Western slopes of the central hills
  • Northern Province
  • North-Central Province
  • North-Western Province
  • Southern Province
  • Trincomalee District

The public has been advised to take precautions against:

  • Temporary localized strong winds
  • Lightning during thundershowers
  • Flooding and falling trees in vulnerable areas

Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as monsoon activity strengthens across the island.
