Sri Lanka Defeat West Indies by 41 Runs to Take Early ODI Series Lead

Sri Lanka began their ODI series against the West Indies with an impressive 41-run victory in the opening match played at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

After being asked to bat first by the hosts, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 303 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs, built around two crucial half-centuries and strong contributions through the middle order.

Pathum Nissanka anchored the innings with a composed 79 off 103 deliveries, while captain Kusal Mendis played an attacking knock of 72 from 62 balls to put Sri Lanka in a strong position.

The partnership between Nissanka and Mendis proved crucial in stabilizing the innings following an early setback and creating a platform for a late acceleration.

Additional contributions from Charith Asalanka, who scored 45, and Janith Liyanage, who remained unbeaten on 44, helped Sri Lanka surpass the 300-run mark.

Chasing a target of 304, the West Indies started positively but struggled to maintain momentum against Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling attack.

The hosts were eventually bowled out for 262 in 49.2 overs despite captain Shai Hope top-scoring with 56 and Justin Greaves contributing 45 runs.

Sri Lanka’s bowling attack played a decisive role in securing victory, with Dushmantha Chameera leading the effort with figures of 4 wickets for 67 runs, claiming key breakthroughs at important moments.

Maheesh Theekshana provided strong support with economical figures of 2 for 26.

Captain Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match for his influential innings, while the victory gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
