The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has announced that a special dengue prevention and control programme will be implemented over three days beginning tomorrow (08), continuing through June 9 and 10, in response to the rapid spread of dengue across the country.
Community Physician Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera stated that authorities have so far identified 14 high-risk districts and 74 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions as vulnerable areas requiring immediate intervention.
According to the NDCU, intensified inspections and mosquito control activities will be carried out during the programme period to reduce breeding sites and minimize disease transmission.
Health authorities have also instructed officials to take necessary legal action against premises where mosquito breeding sites are identified due to negligence.
Dr. Samaraweera noted that Red Notices will be issued to locations found violating dengue prevention regulations.
According to the latest figures, Sri Lanka has recorded 36,168 dengue cases and 20 deaths so far this year.
Health officials have urged the public to actively support prevention efforts by eliminating stagnant water sources, maintaining clean surroundings, and cooperating with inspection teams during the special programme.
Authorities warn that public participation remains critical to controlling the spread of dengue as case numbers continue to rise.
