The Badulla High Court has postponed the sentencing of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri and another accused, who were found guilty of assaulting police officers during an incident in 2019, until July 28.
The case stems from an altercation that occurred near the Bandarawela town roundabout after a police jeep attempted to pass the convoy of the MP, leading to a confrontation between the parties.
According to court proceedings, several police officers were allegedly assaulted during the incident.
The High Court had previously found Chaminda Wijesiri, his driver Bandula Ratnayake, and former Ministerial Security Officer Rasika Karunathilaka guilty on multiple charges, including obstructing public officers from performing their duties, causing grievous bodily harm, and issuing death threats against two individuals.
When the case was called for sentencing today, the court was informed that the first accused, Bandula Ratnayake, was not present before the court.
Accordingly, the High Court decided to postpone the sentencing of the remaining convicted defendants until July 28.
The case will be taken up again on that date for further proceedings and sentencing.
