Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has officially announced a new welfare programme titled “Thai Maman Thanga Modiram”, under which every baby born in government hospitals across the state will receive a one-gram gold ring.
The announcement was made on Tuesday as part of the ruling TVK government’s commitment to fulfilling key election promises.
According to the Chief Minister, the Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs. 755.83 crore annually to implement the welfare scheme.
The programme is scheduled to be officially launched on September 15, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai.
However, the scheme will be implemented with retrospective effect. According to an official government statement, all babies born in government hospitals from June 22—the birthday of Chief Minister Vijay—will also be eligible to receive the gold ring.
Government data indicates that nearly 400,000 babies are born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu each year, making the initiative one of the state’s largest maternal and child welfare programmes.
The Tamil Nadu government stated that the scheme aims to support newborns and their families while reinforcing its commitment to strengthening child welfare and public healthcare services across the state.
