LRT Project Unlikely to Proceed, Government to Prioritise Metro Bus System

July 10, 2026

Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake has indicated that the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is unlikely to be implemented, citing concerns over its cost and economic feasibility.

Speaking in Parliament today, the Minister said the government had conducted a comprehensive study of the project and concluded that it was not practical.

“We have conducted a study in this regard. Considering its cost and the limited number of passengers expected to use it, the Light Rail Transit project does not appear to be practical. Based on these findings, we have decided that it is unlikely to be successful,” the Minister said.

Minister Ratnayake further stated that the government is instead focusing on alternative public transport initiatives, including the Metro Bus Project, which has been assessed as a more economically viable solution for improving urban transport.
