The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) is planning to launch a pilot project to introduce passenger drones as part of efforts to expand the country’s air transport sector.
Director General of Civil Aviation Daminda Rambukwella said the Authority has already initiated steps to implement the pilot project to assess the practical feasibility of operating passenger drones in Sri Lanka.
According to Rambukwella, a single passenger drone will have the capacity to carry up to six passengers.
Passenger drone services are already in operation in countries such as China, Singapore and Thailand. Sri Lanka aims to evaluate the technology through the pilot project before considering its wider introduction.
Before any large-scale implementation, the project will focus on assessing operational, regulatory and safety requirements to ensure the service complies with national and international aviation standards.
