Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri has been sentenced to one and a half years in prison after being found guilty of unlawfully obstructing and threatening two police officers.
The verdict was delivered by Badulla High Court Judge Jayaram Trotsky when the case against Wijesiri, his driver Bandula Rathnayake and Ministerial Security Division police officer Rasika Karunathilaka was taken up before the Badulla High Court.
The court found Wijesiri and his driver guilty on four charges, while police officer Karunathilaka was convicted on three charges.
However, the court was informed that Bandula Rathnayake had died before the conclusion of the trial.
According to evidence presented during the proceedings, the incident occurred on or around 10 February 2019 near the Bandarawela town roundabout. The case stemmed from an altercation that allegedly began after a police jeep overtook the vehicle carrying MP Wijesiri and his associates.
The court subsequently sentenced Wijesiri to 18 months’ imprisonment in connection with the offences.
