The 1990 Suwa Seriya Foundation has announced plans to introduce a motorcycle-based emergency medical service to provide faster medical assistance to patients in urgent situations.
According to the foundation, the new service is intended to improve emergency response times, particularly in areas where heavy traffic and road congestion often delay ambulance access.
The motorcycle emergency units will initially operate in densely populated urban areas, where conventional ambulances face difficulties reaching patients quickly.
The foundation said the primary objective of the initiative is to provide immediate first aid and essential medical support until an ambulance arrives at the scene.
Under the programme, specially trained medical officers will be deployed on motorcycles equipped with essential medicines and emergency medical equipment.
The project is expected to be launched as a pilot programme before the end of this year, with Colombo and several other major urban centres selected for the initial phase of implementation.
