The Government has decided to lease five Presidential Mansions across the country on a long-term basis for tourism investment projects.
The properties identified for long-term lease are located in Bentota, Kataragama, Mahiyanganaya, Embilipitiya and Anuradhapura.
The proposal was submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during the Cabinet meeting held yesterday (27).
The Government said that although several Presidential Mansions have been maintained for official duties and private visits by former presidents, the current President will not use these properties for official activities.
According to the Government, the mansions possess significant architectural and economic value and are equipped with modern facilities and well-designed outdoor surroundings.
At present, the maintenance, security and operational costs of these properties are borne by the Presidential Secretariat using public funds.
Based on the recommendations of a committee appointed to identify the most economically productive use of the properties, the Cabinet has decided to lease the mansions to suitable investors for tourism development projects and invite investment proposals for their long-term development.
