Government to Retain QR Fuel System Amid Middle East Crisis, Says Minister Nalinda Jayatissa

August 26, 2026

The Sri Lankan government has decided to continue the QR code-based fuel quota system due to the ongoing unresolved conflict in the Middle East, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet decision briefing, Minister Jayatissa highlighted that although daily fuel consumption has seen a slight decline, maintaining the QR framework remains essential for managing national fuel supplies effectively.

He noted that the continuing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have directly impacted global crude oil prices, leading to market volatility.

“The fuel crisis is far from over. As a nation, we are utilizing this mechanism to ensure that daily civilian life continues without disruption,” Jayatissa added.
